Overview of this week’s teaching

We explained in Week 5 how using data can help you help citizens. However, there are three key ways in which data can harm citizens:

1 A government can intentionally use data to persecute people.

2 A government can laxly allow for privacy violations.

3 A government can get hacked or have data stolen.

We're going to explain how to look for these problems and manage them.

Let's start by explaining threat modelling, which allows us to see the connection between all three harms.

1 (Intentional Harm) Netherlands civil registry abuse story.

2 (Privacy violation) Rob Ford radiology results. Strava data release.

3 (Hacking/Stealing) Singapore HIV personal data theft & release.
